Every sensible human being is appalled by murder and mayhem, hate and
hooliganism. The Sangh combine has honed these into an art form, so
finely orchestrated and balanced that even the murder of Mahatma Gandhi
looks rather normal. Narendra Modi of Gujarat presents the 2002 pogrom
as some kind of a revolutionary upheaval inspired by the noblest of
ideas.
There are litterateurs and sundry writers in Gujarat who take the idea
further and sublimate it into a great act of catharsis. Naturally, we
need somebody to restore perspective and put things where they belong.
It is here that IK Shukla comes charging in, astride a white steed,
wielding a mighty ex-calibre, so to say.

The most noticeable aspect of Shukla’s work is the sense of moral
outrage at what the Sangh has been up to over the last several decades.
The Sangh has not been demonising only the religious minorities (mainly
Christians and Muslims), but liberals, Marxists and common Indians of
every denomination and political leaning. The Sangh is a microscopic
minority that masquerades as the representative of all Hindus, which it
is not.

To quote Shukla, “the saffron minority, like all fascist formations
in history, resorts to massive vandalism and violence on a regular
basis. Sowing division and discord, therefore, is essential to its
unholy project, entailing social disruption and endangering national
security”.

Shukla is one of the few people who fights against the Sangh on their
own turf. The Sangh sets a great store by its “nationalist”
credentials. But Shukla says they are downright anti-national. Inspired
by nasty men like Hitler, Mussolini and their more recent clones like
Austria’s Gaider and France’s Le Pen, the Sangh has got to be
brutal. One of its mascots, Parveen Togadia, publicly boasts that he
worships Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and US President George W.
Bush. Why? Because in his view, they are the greatest foes of Muslims.
That makes Shukla remark that the Sangh has always been inspired by and
subservient to foreigners.

He makes the point clear by ferreting out Atal Behari Vajpayee’s
mafinama (apology) to the British government in 1942. To secure his
release, several patriots were betrayed and thrown behind bars. That is
a stigma that would not go away, whatever the Sangh does. Shukla rightly
calls Vajpayee a police informer.

The book is a collection of articles written around and after the
Gujarat carnage of 2002. The last articles were written after the
BJP-led NDA was booted out of power from the Centre. Shukla lampoons and
lambasts the neo-fascists relentlessly. Finding prose inadequate to
attack the adversary, he resorts to limerick at a couple of places. He
does not take kindly to Shushma Swaraj threatening to shave her head,
don white sari (even though she is not a widow) and eat roasted gram, if
Sonia Gandhi became prime minister. He challenges her to go ahead and
commit suicide.

In his limerick, taking poetic licence, he turns Shushma into Sush Maa
and Uma Bharti becomes Um Abharti. Incidentally, Abharti (un-Indian) is
the antonym of Bharti (Indian). Shukla is convinced that the Sangh
nationalism is phoney.
It is interesting reading. Well-produced and low-priced, it is virtually
a loot at Rs 130. «

Forced Conversion In Gujarat

September 18, 2008 ujaan Leave a comment

By Shabnam Hashmi

17 September, 2008
Countercurrents.org

Today morning a battery of Forest officers and police descended on the village of Nandapeda near Ahwa in the Dangs, Gujarat. They pulled out the doors and the windows, pulled out the wooden ballis which support the roof; they pulled out wood from the roof of the huts of the villagers. The forest department decided late night that it was illegal wood and they must recover it.

The ATS meanwhile rounded up a few people.

Nandapeda is the only village with majority Muslim population in the Dangs district, considered the poorest district in the whole of India.

The government has been pressurizing the Muslims to convert to the Hindu religion or face eviction from their land.

Some of the residents of this village moved the Gujarat High Court against the government’s pressure of converting and changing their religion.

The families have been living in the village for over 100 years.

On June 13th 2008 a senior officer had called a meeting in Ahwa and asked them to change their religion or vacate the land.

After this meeting police and forest officers had been harassing them. Police have been searching old cases registered against any person of the community and asking them to furnish bail papers. The police targeted 33 people against whom some petty crime or a scuffle with the neighbors was registered.

Claiming that repeated representation before authorities for regularization of their land has been in vain, petitioners requested the court to restrain the government from pressurizing them to convert from their religion. Justice Jayant Panchal had in July sought explanation in this regard from the secretary in-charge, district collector and the village sarpanch.

After hearing all parties, Justice Anant Dave admitted the case on September 11, 2008 and ordered to maintain status quo on the disputed land.

On the next day the police captured approximately 80 villagers for transporting cattle into Maharashtra and also apprehended some villagers who were going on motorcycles using the reason of cow slaughter, though there were no cattle in the tempo.

The villagers gathered. There was a clash between the villagers and the police. People were beaten on both the sides. One policeman was also beaten up. Police then opened fire and a number of villagers got bullet injuries. They were taken to Ahwa civil hospitals. The relatives were not allowed to meet them. Police apprehended eight villagers for beating a policeman and though a local lawyer went for their bail, it was not given.

Next day the police came and in the name of combing operation attacked and ransacked the village. Villagers were beaten up brutally including women and children. All men fled to the jungles. The police not only took away all the goods but before going they poured kerosene into the eatable good so that they could not eat anything too.

VHP proposed a rally on 15th.

After a lot of pressure the VHP rally was stopped but they declared a Bandh on 16th.

The VHP gave a deadline to the collector it is heard to get the village vacated.

Today morning as already mentioned the forest department swooped in.

The villagers need urgent help and intervention. I have been personally informing various state politicians and centre about the developments.

Orissa: Hindu extremists burn one nun alive, rape another

by Nirmala Carvalho

Bubaneshwar (AsiaNews) – A Catholic nun was burnt alive by a group
of Hindu fundamentalists who stormed the orphanage she ran in the
district of Bargarh (Orissa), this according to Police
Superintendent Ashok Biswall. A priest who was at the orphanage was
also badly hurt and is now being treated in hospital for multiple
burns. Another nun from Bubaneshwar’s Social Centre was gang raped
by groups of Hindu extremists before the building housing the
facility was set on fire. Sources also told AsiaNews that elsewhere
one priest was wounded and two other were abducted. The list of
violent anti-Christian acts is thus getting longer.
For the past two days the state of Orissa (north-east India) has
been racked by violence following the assassination of radical Hindu
leader Swami Laxanananda Saraswati.

Churches, community and pastoral centres, convents and orphanages
have been attacked yesterday and today by mobs shouting “Kill the
Christians; destroy their institutions.”

Tensions in the state are in fact still running high. The Vishwa
Hindu Parishad (VHP) has planned demonstrations for today and
tomorrow. Gangs of Hindu fanatics from the VHP as well as Sangh
Parivar are roaming roads and villages, setting up road blocks,
sending their own members on raids of plunder and violence.

According to firsthand accounts the archdiocese’s social centre was
attacked and torched. Before that the attackers raped Sister Meena,
a nun working at the centre.

The local pastoral centre, which has escaped destruction in last
December’s violence, is now a total wreck. Father Thomas, who ran
the facility, is in hospital with serious head injuries.

Speaking to AsiaNews Fr Ajay Singh also said that a nun was burnt
alive in an orphanage she ran in the district of Bargarh.

Elsewhere Sisters of Mother Teresa have been attacked by stone-
throwing Hindu militants with one seriously injured.

All Christian institutions are now in danger because mobs of Hindu
radicals are roaming the streets, breaking down doors and smashing
windows, including in some cases Christian homes. Many priests and
nuns have had to escape.

In Bubaneshwar Hindu militants stoned the Archbishop’s residence,
but did not dare invade the place because of police presence.

In Phulbani the parish church and the home of local clergy were
attacked and set on fire. All local priests fled and found refuge in
the homes of some of members of the local congregation.

The youth hostel that houses students who study in Phulbani has also
been torched.

Some missionaries of Charity who were attending a health course in
Brahamanigoan were blocked for hours in the village.

Elsewhere nuns left their convent finding shelter in some school
buildings

Nagpur rocks -Vidarbha shocks-Exclusive (c)

August 23, 2008 ujaan 1 comment

When I went to find out in Yahoo ID Nagpurrocks I found he is a 22 year old with little experience of life, my attention shifted to poverty and farmers suicides in Vidarbha and was shocked to discover in documents 2.6 million (13%) of Vidarbha population has embraced Buddhism out of 17 million (1.5%) in India.

Just like Amartya Sen, Economics Nobel Laureate, home district is most under developed in West Bengal, Vidarbha home of RSS is the poorest region in India and most of its districts among the poorest in Maharashtra as well.

Vidardha, home of RSS symbolized atrocities on Dalits and highest rate of conversion in India though RSS was founded with aim to unite Hindus but also symbolize exploitation of farmers that has no parallel in the world recording highest suicide rates for Cotton farmers which is the principle crop ahead of oranges.

Charging 120% to even 300% rate of interest on farm loans by upper caste Hindus from lower caste is not the way to unite Hindus. (Reference Vidarbha Report)

[RSS was founded in 1925 by Dr. Keshav Baliram Hedgewar, a Nagpur doctor, with the aim to unite Hindus. Hedgewar proposed that Hindus must unite to face challenges and protect the freedom and diversity of Indian civilization. The organization was able to establish itself throughout the country on account of its nationalistic ideology and sacrifices of selfless karyakartas. The "pracharaks" or "full-time workers", who were spread all over the country, and karyakartas helped make RSS the world's biggest social welfare organisation. Also, the organization took part in the Indian independence movement.]

I have calculated a set of under garments that retail for Rs.100, value of cotton in it is just Rs.10 at present highest level. Farmers get only Rs.5 out of this and accounting for cost of seeds, sowing, harvesting and other operations farmer´s net income is just Rs.2.

A cotton farmer´s family of five that may need 20 sets of under garments a year pay Rs.2000 but cotton in under garments is just 3 kgs and he was paid between Rs.50 to Rs.100 and his net income was between Rs.20 to Rs..40.

There will always be people having less then others. There will be people having less then you. That´s the way the world is made. And that´s the way the world can, and has survived till now.

NOW, Mukesh or Anil collecting/ wasting or throwing away cash is not causing or prevailing poverty. Keep in mind that all the cash he has is just paper. Its value is decided by the government. We have a system here. A system that allows us to live without killing each other when we please.

Also remember that Mukesh and Anil pay taxes to this system. And I bet they pay more tax then u and me. It really hurts me to see people disliking someone coz of his success or wealth. People deserve the success or not, they have had it. The system was designed to help the people, to remove poverty and ensure safe and dignified lives to the citizen. This System, the government, administrator, police, courts, banks, everything. They are responsible for what we see.

Unholy Alliance

The Hindu
August 08, 2008
Editorial

Jammu and Kashmir is teetering on the edge of a communal abyss. For the past fortnight, violent mobs have disrupted civic life in Jammu, staged assaults on policemen, and blockaded supplies headed north on the highway to Srinagar. Muslims have been attacked, and their properties torched. The Amarnath Yatra Sangarsh Samiti, a coalition of Hindu religious and communal organisations, is on the war path. Its aim is to compel the government to restore 40 hectares of land earlie r granted to the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board – a grant that was revoked following a similar, communally charged agitation in Kashmir. Hindutva leaders in Jammu claim that the revocation of the land transfer is an affront to Hindu ‘religious rights’ – a claim as bizarre as that of Islamists who claimed the transfer was part of a conspiracy to alter Kashmir’s Muslim-majority character. The reality is that all land granted to the Shrine Board remains available to pilgrims, just as it was long before the Shrine Board came into existence. However, appeals to reason and national interest have cut no ice with leaders of the sangh parivar. Kashmir’s marginalised Islamists, and the Hindu communal bloc in Jammu, which had its nose rubbed in the dirt in the last Assembly elections, are clearly locked in an unholy alliance to maximise trouble.

It is a reflection on the Bharatiya Janata Party’s cynical political agenda that it refused to call for calm or endorse Governor N.N. Vohra’s appeals for dialogue. BJP leaders must reflect on the grave implications of the course they have taken in India’s most troubled and vulnerable State. From the time of the Ayub Khan dictatorship, Pakistan has backed what is called the Chenab Plan, a proposal to divide the State along the river that marks its communal frontiers. Over the years, variants of this partition plan have been endorsed by both Hindu and Muslim communalists. The Lashkar-e-Taiba tried to implement the plan by massacring Hindus along the Pir Panjal mountains, in the hope of provoking their southward migration and the expulsion of Muslims through retaliatory riots in Jammu. Where its guns and bombs failed, the Shrine Board riots seem to be succeeding. It isn’t just the BJP that needs to reflect on its role in this dangerous affair. So too must the People’s Democratic Party, which first assented to the land transfer decision and changed course to capitalise on Islamist resentment. The Congress must also take its share of the blame for precipitating the current J&K crisis in the first place. The all-party meeting, a worthwhile if belated firefighting effort by the central government, failed to produce anything other than a general endorsement of the desirability of creating a congenial environment to resolve the crisis through dialogue. Unless all the major players cooperate with Governor Vohra in his efforts to find a modus vivendi along uncompromisingly secular lines, there will be a horrific price to pay.
